Timpson Bears Gymnasium on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 –
On Tuesday Timpson ISD hosted a State Football Championship ring ceremony for the 2023 Timpson Bears varsity state championship football team. The ceremony was kicked off by Timpson ISD Superintendent Mid Johnson who welcomed the public who were in attendance. Johnson spoke of the achievements of the Bears team and said, “This is the first time in over 100 years in Timpson school history reach the goal of winning a state championship. In reflection, it becomes obvious God had a presence in the entire situation.” Johnson next called forward the school board and recognized and gave recognition to Cody Beckham, Justin Timmons, Joyce Wolfe, Carlos Johnson, Jim Rader, Tammy Sparks, and Stephen Burgay.

Johnson next introduced coach 2023 Head Football Coach / Athletic Director Kerry Therwhanger. Therwhanger introduced officials from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine and Whataburger who presented 2023 Whataburger Super Team Football awards to senior athletes Tyler Lane and Terry Bussey. The two seniors were chosen from a ballot which was tallied from over 300 thousand ballots. Only 40 total athletes across the state received these awards.

Therwhanger recognized Nick Clark for a trainer award next he introduced Debra Smith who presented the Bears a proclamation award from the City of Timpson. The coach then recognized his coaching staff and recognized each one. He gave special recognition to Patrick Gandy who will take over as head coach next season. He also gave special recognition to coach Torres who coached with him for 25 of his 38 years of coaching at both Lovelady and Timpson schools. He also recognized the school’s managers who helped the team with locker-room and sideline duties.

Among the many achievements Therwhanger listed he stated, “In the 123 years of Timpson school history there have been eight 10-win football seasons, we have five of them.” The last recognition was to the State Champion Bears football team who were each announced and received their rings from the school.
